VIENNA, Austria – Music has always been at the heart of worship, lifting prayers and bringing people closer to God. Recognizing the important role of sacred music in the liturgy, the Filipino Catholic Community (FCC) in Vienna organized a Music Ministry Workshop on 29 July 2026 at Salvator am Wienerfeld, featuring acclaimed Filipino baritone Zip Mercado De Guzman as guest facilitator.
The workshop gathered members of the FCC Music Ministry—choir singers, instrumentalists, music leaders, and volunteers—for a day of learning, inspiration, and spiritual renewal. Through vocal exercises, choral techniques, and reflections on the deeper meaning of liturgical music, participants were encouraged to continue serving the Church with both excellence and humility.
More than improving musical skills, the workshop reminded participants that the Music Ministry is first and foremost a ministry of service.
The FCC Music Ministry has long been an integral part of the Filipino Catholic Community in Vienna. Every Sunday and during special feast days, its members faithfully lead the congregation in singing during Holy Masses, helping create a solemn and prayerful atmosphere where the faithful can actively participate in the Eucharistic celebration. Their dedication extends beyond rehearsals and performances, as they generously offer their time and talents to enrich the community’s worship and strengthen its spiritual life.
Throughout the workshop, De Guzman emphasized that church musicians are not entertainers but ministers who proclaim God’s message through sacred music. He encouraged participants to prepare diligently, pray sincerely, and always remember that every hymn sung during the liturgy is an act of worship.
Widely respected in the Philippine classical music scene, Zip Mercado De Guzman has earned international recognition for his remarkable achievements as a baritone. He won First Prize in the American Protégé International Vocal Competition in both 2016 and 2017, leading to performances at the prestigious Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in New York City. In addition to his distinguished performing career, he is an accomplished educator and conductor, holding academic qualifications in Communication Arts, Music Education, and Vocal Performance. His passion for nurturing church musicians has inspired choirs and music ministries both in the Philippines and abroad.
Participants described the workshop as an enriching experience that combined technical excellence with spiritual formation. Many expressed appreciation for the practical guidance they received on vocal production, choir blending, musical interpretation, and the sacred responsibility entrusted to liturgical musicians.
The Filipino Catholic Community in Vienna extended its heartfelt gratitude to Zip Mercado De Guzman for generously sharing his expertise and inspiring the Music Ministry to continue growing in faith and musical excellence. The workshop also reflected the community’s ongoing commitment to investing in the formation of its volunteers, ensuring that the ministry continues to inspire the faithful through reverent and meaningful sacred music.
As the final notes of the workshop faded, one message remained clear: music in the Church is more than beautiful sound—it is prayer, ministry, and a powerful expression of faith. Through dedicated musicians and opportunities for continuous formation such as this workshop, the Filipino Catholic Community in Vienna continues to ensure that every celebration of the Holy Mass becomes a heartfelt encounter with God through song.
